Hi Everyone,

To those interested, I would like to share some news with you. Some of you may already know that I teach a painting course at the Art Gallery of Ontario. In January I will be teaching now LIFE DRAWING. Course registration is ending, so please register before the course is full. Below are the full details about the course and how to register. Life Drawing

WEDNESDAYS, January 11 – February 29, @ 7 – 10 pm (8 weeks)

Prerequisite: Any drawing course or some background in any form of visual art.
Working with life models, students will explore the technical and perceptual skills needed to confidently produce drawings. Students are responsible for the purchase of their own materials.

Pulp Friction will be an art exhibition focusing entirely on artists who work with paper within their artistic practice. This show has assembled a broad collection of artists, examining how process-demands of this medium are achieved, how they are experimented with, subse...quently looking at the gestural, minimal, along with the laborious applications that are a result of working with paper.

Because of the vast variety of works as a part of this group, this exhibition will be an irregular, contrasting installation, focusing on labour-intensive works vis-a-vis the gestural, and gestural works vis-a-vis the minimal, and with minimal works vis-à-vis the labour-intensive, highlighting the diversity, resulting in a viscerally appealing montage for the viewer. The installation will be impulsive, leaving the viewer to make their own understanding, therefore having a fresh sense of what has been and is being achieved with paper, thus encouraging a positive, thought-provoking dialogue."

Hello everyone,

I am pleased to share some news with you. I will be teaching a new course that I have designed for the Art Gallery of Ontario called Integrated Drawing, if you're interested please visit the AGO web-site.

In this course, students will examine drawing from the perspective of various disciplines. Combining studio practice and visits to the AGO exhibitions, and several in-class demonstrations, this course will explore the possibilities of non-traditional materials and approaches to drawing. Drawing from a model, installation, mark-making, bookwork or scroll work, performance and drawing in painting will be investigated.

The course will start January 9th, 2012 and will run (on Mondays) until March 5th, 2012 (8 weeks).

Postcard Project I (Harvest Festival 2010)

In 2006, the city of Toronto created a night where artists and art lovers could come together to celebrate the spectacle that is Toronto. Starting at dusk and not concluding until dawn, individuals from around the world are treated to a free art show put together by both local and international artists.

Brownstone Bistro will have 3 artists, including myself, who will be displaying their creativity in a variety of mediums including painting, drawing, digital design, and fashion. In addition to this, continuing with the theme of the White Night, the Bistro will be featuring complimentary samples of Kronenbourg's White Beer, Kronenbourg Blanc. This wheat beer combines the smooth, tangy taste of orange citrus with their brilliantly crafted lager. As if that was not enough, the chef has designed an all new Tapas menu which he will be unveiling the night of the event!

A Cat Fight - There’s something about the spectacle of a cat fight that’s hard to resist. The appeal is in the messy way that females fight with scrappy jibes, hair pulling, eye scratchy, green-eyed fury. September 01 at Headbones Gallery, Aleks Bartosik from Toronto (feisty paintings and bold big drawings) will stand up to the Vernon she-cat Julie Oakes. This is not the first time the two have curled their lips back and meowed, Headbones at Art Mur Gallery, Montreal, also witnessed their furious dynamics in April, 2010 as the crowd jeered and cheered. A Cat Fight - Making a drawing feels like that sometimes. It begins with scratching away at the paper, trying to make a dent in the overwhelming white-space of aesthetic existence. The drawing may seem to be getting somewhere, hitting that stride, grooving in a space where the sun has come out and there is nothing to do but purr. Then a snag. A rustle in the leaves perhaps. A rodent-like, bird-brain of an idea crosses the path of vision and with a stretch and flex, it’s time to rise to the occasion. Eyes narrow to slits for better focus. A leap, a dive, and a close brush with annihilation that could erase the entire project. The claws come out. It is time to get serious, to tackle. Is it ego against id or artist against paper? And with both sides so similar, it’s hard to tell the difference between the two once those claws have appeared.

“interference” is a collaboration between 23 artists and edmund law. it is about seeing and understanding art in a translated way - by not seeing it at all. in this project each artist allows law to conceal their work in brown craft paper and objectively describe it on the cover. this text as medium, is written to encourage the viewer to bypass their sight, and use the interior eyes of the imagination to visualize the art; like the book of a movie adaptation is so much better because it satisfies the reader who invents and interprets the whole written world in their mind. in law’s opinion, this is partly due to the time we spend with the words, story and the characters etc of a book. it is not to say that law’s writing is better than the art it’s composed from, but that by spending more time with the words than we normally would looking at art, it may become more vivid in the mind rather than by simply using our eyes in a momentary fashion (5-30 secs. per painting av. according to some museum surveys). in addition to the descriptive texts are qrcodes generated from a more subjective theoretical and creative musing - some written by elenore chesnutt, an artist/writer and some by anna le roy, a philosopher/art enthusiast. this coded text is meant to provide further insight into the possibilities of meaning and interpretation from a single viewers perspective.

They look at the experience of bodies in states of adjustment, passion, transformation and adaptation to the limitations that form one’s reality; and invite us, instead, to wander into their playgrounds of curiosity and dream.

Artist Statement:
The body has always been central to my work, as a compass to navigate through the layers of a physical reality. The vulnerability of the flesh is a bridge between what was and what will be, continuously regenerating itself as it sheds its layers of stories and creates new ones. I am drawn to a suggestive body that lingers between mythology, history, and a temporal body that sleeps in an ocean of possible forms that reflect what is real and imagined.

POSTCARD PROJECT for Harvest Fest 2010
my art contribution to the festival

For this year's Harvest Festival held in Burk's Falls in Ontario, I made 43 postcards with my artwork. Each card is original and numbered according to how many of that particular artwork were in an edition especially made for Harvest Fest 2010. (edition is written at the top left corner of each card)

I distributed them amongst my friends and the people I met on the dance-floor at Harvest during Saturday night. 40 postcards were successfully filled out and sent!

I loved Harvest Festival last year so much, and I thought, what a wonderful feeling it would be to receive a postcard roughly 2 weeks after the event just to rekindle some of those good vibes, experiences and memories of the new people we all met and those we already know. Also, it was my attempt to share my artwork with the people who participated.

I went around and asked people, those who were willing to participate, to choose a postcard they like, write their address on the back, put it back in the pile and choose another card (with someone else's address already in place, someone you may not even know!) and write a message.

Your message : ANYTHING! Can be just good wishes, a statement, your dreams, your fears, your secrets, a love letter, a story, a description, anything! You were free to choose to sign your name on the message or remain completely anonymous, or make one up.

So, people left addresses and signed their messages on random cards from the pile, including myself. Small donations were asked to help me cover the cost of postage.

I hope to make this project even BIGGER next year! Enjoy! XO

Recently I was working on a project with a couple of my good and talented friends, Pierre and Susan Gregory. Pierre is a talented screen and play writer, as well as, an actor who just finished a play with his theatre group, Les Indisciplinés de Toronto, at the Bibliothèque Palmerston in Toronto last week. The play, Si c'est pas toi, c'est moi, was a great success! (for the review, please check out: http://www.lexpress.to/archives/5161/). Susan appeared in a couple of short films in New Zealand.

We have finally completed our first short film together, Horse ride on a Sunday, and hope to screen it in several Film Festivals. We will keep you posted!

Hi everyone, I would like to first of all thank all those that had helped with the project; the entire wonderful staff of the Art Gallery of Mississauga and my sister Sylwia, and to all those who have came to visit me during the painting event. Thank you for your wonderful enthousiasm and your much appreciated support! The event took place in the skate park in Mississauga at the back of AGM on Sunday July 12th. I painted on a wall where my good friend Jeff Garcia, aka Mangoe Peeler, painted before - notice I left some of his work still... that of which still existed anyways. Here is the story of the painting... borrowing artichoke hearts, with the help of a friend of mine, the horse-head:

When I saw an image of artist Aleks Bartosik and her sister Sylwia holding hands emerging from an alley clad in dainty dresses and adorned with HORSE HEADS I was immediately struck with the beauty of this image.

For those of you with siblings, their performance art will likely conjure up images of childhood when playing little people, lost orphans or backyard pioneers was so powerful that any sense of reality was thwarted by an overwhelming imagination. Everyday problems like parental fights, looming homework or schoolyard bullies could be conquered with an escape through play.

One memory that particularly comes to mind is when, for what seemed like days, my sister and I created an entire community of families with magazine cut outs. The naming process, breakdown of ages and relationships was so thorough that we felt like Gods. In one fell swoop I decided a tornado would hurl through the village strewn across the bedroom floor.

The organized imaginary world was ruined instantaneously and all our efforts to create a cohesive environment vanished. Being the older sister, I had control over these Mother Nature catastrophes, and my poor younger sister was left crying and deflated feeling like her careful hours of time devoted to these paper people was for nothing. GAME OVER.

These major decisions then were indicative of an age where play began to disappear. Being ten or so at the time, I had grown sick of the village and decided that I'd rather wander downstairs and watch TV. However, for the younger sibling this was devastating, as she was nowhere near the end of the game.

How do we as adults return to this world where reality is frozen and play dominates our mind and spirit completely?

As adults we drink, dance and screw to have fun. This is how we remove ourselves from the routine of hard work, difficult times and stress. Perhaps if we adorned ourselves in costume, and held hands through the streets or tapped into our inner child more often we wouldn’t require so many vices, and would return to a spot in time where things stood still and closet doors led to magical worlds. It’s difficult to do this for several reasons, but perhaps the scariest being that if we try we may fail and be struck with how distanced and jaded we’ve become since childhood. .

I asked Aleks what inspired her and she responded sincerely: People. I'm inspired by the particularities, delicacies, sensitivities, beauties and obsessions held within relationships between lovers, siblings/twins, friends, strangers, or themselves. I like to observe the visible (and accessible) interactions between people and the situations they are placed in and re-create my own scenarios and my own environments and narrations.

If people were to walk away and express your Horse Head art in a few words, what would you want them to say? What is the thought that you want people to leave with having seen this work? I want the viewers to have experienced some sort of a visual pleasure. Entered some sort of an imaginary land or situation. I am not particularly sure what I would like them to say, but I know what I would like them to experience. Perhaps they may say something like: "That was strange." in a delightful sense or a frightened sense. The Horse Heads (a work in progress) are rooted in a larger and deeper narrative, but I purposefully want them to appear playful and child-like.

Unlike most of the Featured Artists, I found it very difficult to sit down and write about the HORSE HEADS. The sight of them swarmed me with memories, feelings and emotion; the fragility of childhood, power of the imagination, and preciousness of magic.

Some art is difficult to verbalize yet makes us feel completely alive. I have described the HORSE HEADS performance as best I can and can only hope that if you are walking down Queen Street one day and are greeted by two sisterly mares, that you become overwhelmed with soft childhood memories – the kind that pull at your heart.

once there was a girl is a film about a girl-woman-horse who is enchanted by two creatures that she cannot love. hiding her inner passions, losses, obsessions and lusts, the girl-woman-horse befriends one of the creatures and lives with it in an imaginary empty and lost space. she imagines happiness, unable to accept her losses, and lives a self-created content situation.

The 2007 Juried Drawing group show promotes both emerging and experienced Ontario artists. The definition of a drawing can be ambiguous and this exhibition will engage in a discourse on the subject by illustrating a variety of approaches to drawing. Drawing tends to entail problem solving and observation. This may include sketches, diagrams, preparatory designs, animation, sculpture or textile built up by line, or accomplished finished works.

a little blurb... nuit blanche was an interesting night event that i was honoured to, even briefly, take part in (my performance was short). this was my first time going to it and i have only heard great things about it. in my opinion, if it was not for the lovely company that i travelled with from one exhibition to the next, nuit blanche itself was not very inspiring nor art-filled like i expected. perhaps i had too high expectations? or, perhaps the zones were too far apart? in any case, i wish there was more art work to be shown: things out of the ordinary white-cube display... pieces that could utilise the streets and the outside environment better. i had a Great time, but i hope that in the future this show will expand artistically and creatively, and not just geographically (more zones). I think nuit blanche is an excellent idea to work with for all types of artists as it brings the art to the public; to the streets; to the everyday toronto surroundings at a strange time of the day/night. i imagine it can have wonderful potential for the arts and exposure for canadian artists.
